It was especially interesting for me because I knew and worked with Lew Kamann for several years on the waterfront. Lew moved up to Nanaimo and was a foreman with Canadian Stevedoring for several years. Lew passed away about twenty years ago and I now wish that I had paid closer attention to the stories Lew enjoyed sharing. He talked often about the Molly Justice murder and of course Frank Hulbert. One story really stands out. Years ofter the Justice murder Lew was on his way to work in Port Alberni and came across a couple with a broke down vehicle. This was about 6:30 am and still dark but Lew offered to take them into Alberni and drop them off at a garage and they would then be able to help them. The lady got into the front seat with Lew and the guy sat in the back. As they were nearing Port Alberni it began to get daylight and to Lew’s surprise and I suppose shock while looking in the rear view mirror he noticed the guy and it was Hulbert.
