My wife’s father (Dean Wallace) worked for Neon Products at the time and sold the Bow Mac sign to Jimmy Pattison. As he told the story, Jimmy ordered the huge sign and then reneged on payment once it was completed. He figured no one would pay for it to be demolished and so ‘renegotiated’ a substantially reduced contract.

If not mistaken, the Mackenzie Bowell shown in the historic Bowell McLean ad was a descendant of the brief Conservative prime minister of same name who served in Canada’s top political position from 1894-1896. Prior to politics, that Mackenzie Bowell also helped found what became The Canadian Press.
