In reply to <a href="https://evelazarus.com/henry-hudson-elementary-school-1911-2025/#comment-62971">Rob</a>.

They "can't" preserve the old schools because... In my opinion in this case, it's because this is a wealthy postal code and they prioritize new buildings for the best areas.

We're in East Van, with an older school than Hudson, and our seismic upgrade last year did not replace our school, update ventilation or light, add room for more students at an over-capacity school, etc. We did get an elevator, but only thanks to a wonderful, tireless advocate who has a son in a chair--she had to fight long and hard for it to be included.

I used to live near Hudson and will miss the beautiful building when I'm in the area, but as a mom to an elementary aged child, I'd have applauded had they built a new school rather than seismically updating an old school to the bare minimum.

We were just in Victoria for Spring break and break and noticed the Victoria school district has kept their heritage schools and seismically upgraded and restored them. I am at a loss why we can’t preserve these old schools in Vancouver. They all tell stories about our ancestors who were here before us. These stories become who we are as Vancouverites and Canadians. At a time when we are under threat from a foreign entity, history, stories and culture matter. Please reconsider destroying any more schools. BTW, seems like the new school has hardly any natural light from windows. Shame.
