Thanks once again, Eve, for giving us the “story behind the story.” I find this issue fascinating because the headline, photos and wording in Douglas Todd's original news story made me a little shocked at the “discovery” of these gravestones. Funny how one person’s “pile of dirt” or “crummy piece of dirt” is another person’s garden—an attempt to beautify the city in a small way. To me, memorials and gardens go together well. I’m pleased to learn more about this Vancouver artist and gardener, so thanks again for digging up these important details.

I am the daughter of Anna Ruppe and the sister of Herbert. I was appalled when I saw this story, and then to find it was stolen really shook me up. I wanted to get it back but have not had any luck with global news. I called them 3 times and was told someone would get back to me. No one has called. Our family did not retrieve the stone from her garden. I talked to the cemetary. The news hour and Rena's story conflict. Something is not right with this story. If anyone hears anything more on this headstone, please contact me. Thank you.
