Mary, I lived there in the early 70s. My bedroom was the one which had no doorway to the hall, only into the bathroom and a neighboring bedroom. I loved that house. I hope you see this reply, as your comment was a while ago.

My Family lived there in the mid-late 60s. We heard the story of the tunnel, which apparently started in the well which was under the basement, and ended at the Fraser River. We heard contraband was smuggled that way. We were never courageous enough to look for the tunnel.
The tower had been removed before we moved there, though we heard about it. It's nice to see that it's now been restored.

Dear Eve: Thank you for your story about Karl von Mackensen. I am a member of a project team attempting to write and publish a history book on the Vernon BC WWI Internment Camp. Karl von Mackensen was one of the interesting and prominent Germans imprisoned in the camp, and I would like your permission to quote some excerpts from your blog/article to include in my draft Chapter on Sociological aspects of the Vernon Camp. Our project team are members of the non-for-profit Vernon and District Family History Society and we are working closely with the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives organization, also not-for-profit, to compile this project book. We strive for accurate citations in our writing, so I can promise you will be given proper credit for any of your materials, quoted or used.

Thank You! Jerry Thompson, VDFHS past President

Thank You for sharing this great story Eve

I first remember hearing this story in the local papers in the 80's or 90's as developers wanted to knock it down, and historians wanted to preserve the site. The 3rd picture is how it looks now the building was relocated a bit higher up the property and restored it is not "The Baron Pub" located on the corner of 96th and 192nd in Port Kells Surrey.

I hope you don't mind that I shared it on a Facebook History Fanpage using some of you pictures and others I found elsewhere on Google with my own intro commentary that you see above followed by the suggestion to visit this blog with the link provided.

Thank You
