I lived at 2264 Cornwall Avenue from 1965-70. It was then called Malcolm Manor. The name is now Beach House and the number was changed to 2268 Cornwall. A wonderful place to live. It had a bedroom but many times on wintery evenings I would pull down the Murphy bed in the living room and sleep there so I could wake in the mornings and see the snow laden mountains facing me. It even had a fireplace and a large kitchen. The rent was $100 and $4 for parking at the back. It was just under half my earnings as a secretary at UBC but well worth it. I would work late nights at the Department of Economics to make more money and buy furniture - 40 cents a page and 5 cents a carbon!
Around the corner on Yew Street there was Elsie's Bakery. (Elsie's daughter - or a family member - ran Liberty Cafe on Main Street and her strudels were so delicious. Liberty is still there and is still quirky, though run by different people.). And there was Paul's Meats where, in 1965, one could buy two steaks for a dollar! On the corner of Yew and York Avenue Kits Cameras opened their first store. The owner's wife was called Babs and was quite curvy and beautiful - my brother was quite smitten with her!
Good happy days indeed. I would sit in the window of my 2nd floor apartment on the weekends and watch the sunbathers arrive first thing. There was no fence there in those days. They would put a towel down on the grass and stay there ALL day....
Above me lived an older lady called Mrs. Bronquist if I remember correctly. I had a little Scandinavian lamp made with red wool as a shade. She informed me it was not a good idea to have it near the window as folk might get the wrong idea!
The building was run by a formidable woman called Mrs. Schaefer. She never smiled. She was rather scary. My boyfriend - later to become my husband - would sometimes stay over and I had to see if the coast was clear in the mornings for him to escape....once it was impossible as she was more or less standing guard and he had to jump out of the kitchen window which was quite high up!
Oh yes - such happy days and I am grateful to have lived them.

Hello Gord, my name is Melinda Harman, my father was Jack Harman who had the bronze casting foundry on Alexander Street where you rented your studio space. It was so interesting to read your story about your time and experience in Vancouver back then. I remember that my dad rented studio space and am happy to know that he was generous to young artists by keeping the rent low 🙂

I opened a small store next to Livestream in 1972 and soon after moved it further up 4th to 2361. It was called Second Time Around. We rented the back to a girl from San Francisco who ran a vintage clothing store called Jack Flash and Sons. Some around then may remember the life sized old man and woman who sat in chairs in front of Second Time Around. Our sign was done by the girl who was an illustrator for The Georgia Straight. It was of an elf sitting under a psychedelic mushroom smoking a hookah with the words Second Time Around coming in smoke coming from the hookah. Our delivery truck was a 56 Merc with eyes painted on the front bonnet. I don't even recognize Kitsolino today!

I grew up on 7th and Bayswater. So many memories. My parents still live in the same house.
They bought it in 1965 for 22 grand. Remember Rohans rockpile, Blackswan records. I remember leather shops, head shops, health food stores. Hamleton Harvey / Fedco ,department store on 4th and Steven's. Before that it was a curling rink. Tatlow park was a major hangout for us. Little league baseball was a blast.
We would have a parade from Broadway and Mcdonald west to Waterloo and north to Mcbride park for opening day. Could go on and on. Great place to grow up.

Thank you for your mention Phyllis, Yes it was a typical street scene with the working parents, so you can imagine how out of place I was at Henry Hudson. lol There was an abandoned gas station on the corner of W.3rd & Burrard and for some reason I was always fascinated by it, probably because of the 40's or so architecture & how it probably was a very busy place back in it's day on Burrard. After a very long search through Vancouver archives I finally found the closest picture that I think was the original service station. Now I just have to find it in my archives .. lol I remember Mom telling me when Janis Joplin & The Grateful Dead came to town and after their shows they ended up in our neighborhood and down at the Peace House. Although that was before my time, Although I do remember various Orange & Purple substances from the days, if you know what I mean 😎 lol I wish I could remember his name, Mom used to babysit for his kids when they lived at the Peace House, he was one of the founders of Addle Chromish (Light Show) I think the name was & unfortunately his tragic story in the end ..
