The Schaefers were followed in 1925 by Captain
Thomas Manson (1874-1946) and his family. Captain
Manson, Master Mariner and Coastal Pilot, came to
Canada in 1892 from the Shetland Islands in Scotland.
A well-liked, jovial man, he enjoyed hosting friends at
the house, particularly for games of bridge and community dances held in the basement. On his death,
his ashes were committed to the sea at what is known
as Manson’s Deep, one of the deepest points at the
entrance to Howe Sound.

I am trying to bolt in Captain Manson at the Shetland end.

There is a Captain Thomas John Manson from the island of Yell born 1864. Do you know if that is him? Unfortunately there were quite a few Thomas Mansons around but he is the only one known to be a Captain and there is no Shetland record of his marriage or death.

I am researching a story about Mariner’s Rest in Howe Sound for the Western Mariner Magazine. In the course of my research, I have come across references to Manson’s Deep located in deep water off Point Atkinson. I am trying to learn more about Manson’s Deep, whether there are any decendants of Thomas Manson I could contact and the exact location of this burial ground. Would you have any leads you could share with me?
