In reply to Todd Wong. I love reading all these things. I hung around Chinatown when I went to Strathcona for grade 7 and Britannia for high school from 1972 to 1978. My sister was a big fan of Linda Ronstadt and so was I because of her.

I spent a weekend in there as a 15 year old in 1972. Was not a bad kid but made some bad choices. My biggest memory is a large guard grabbing my 104 pound body in a headlock and running my head into a brick wall for using the f word.

I was the owner of Second Time Around in the old 5 and 10 cent store across from what then was Plimley Dodge. In our back room was Jack Flash & Sons, Bubbles vintage clothing store. We used to let our dog Sophie out the back of the store in the morning and she would reappear around closing time at 5pm – hard to believe if you know that area now. We saw the change coming and got out before it happened. Vancouver was magical then

I lived in nearby Terrace back there. CBC news portrayed this as a tragedy: “Boo hoo! These poor boys!”

The locals who knew what was really the situation had nothing but sympathy for Vermette, quickly adding “…er…but he should not have shot them…”

I hope Kevin got away, even if I burn in hell for hoping.

I love the photos and I lived it, well as a kid of 8 or 9. We lived off the water at Cates Park and I ventured in every day eating warm bread with honey, wondering what the good smells were and buying scraps of suede.

I worked for W.R. Cranna’s Jewellers where Anne and Bambi did a lot of business, buying crystal, china, flatware and jewelry. I designed a $15,000 diamond and emerald ring for her…it had some 60 plus small diamonds surrounding the large emerald. While Anne lived in the nice house in Naramata, I lived in a one roomed cabin in Kaleden. It had a cold water tap, no sink and a toilet in one corner. I filled a pail of water from the water tap, to use in the toilet. I got an extra twenty dollars in my pay that month……
I went to school with Ken Duncan. Yes, Anne may have been seen as a modern day Robin Hood, but she did damage many local people as Ken has stated.

My Grandfather, George Williams, who was mentioned in this podcast, had told many stories about this case to my Mom. He was part of the search and testified in court about this. My Mom has filled in many of the missing aspects but, unfortunately, my Grandfather passed in 2001 before i really got intrigued with this case. I would love to have heard it from him directly. For perspective, my Grandparents home was up the alley from the Bennetts house and my Mom played with his daughter Karen when they were younger. All in all, very sad case that most likely will remain unsolved unless there is an obvious major breakthrough.

My wife was in the last graduating class of King Ed, in 1962. Whenever she is asked what high school she attended, her answer “I was the last graduating class of King Ed”. When it became Vancouver City College, she worked for the Vice Principal of Student Affairs and their offices were in the old girls gym.

What first attracted my attention to the book was..the cover illustration ! Top quality & perfectly adapted to the very inspiring story between the covers . ( found my copy in used bookshop in Mtl) 15 years have passed and am presently re-reading it with renewed pleasure and respect for this very special author & mom.

My now husband and I had our first real date at Trader Vic’s (I have a photo) and we had several dates after that. We loved it! It was always special and we were very sad to find that it no longer existed. Very sad.

I have been looking into grain elevators for a humanities course focusing on Construction History. More specifically, I am looking at the Halifax Grain Elevator and its relation to the surrounding residential neighbourhoods through case studies of past explosions and preventative measures that have been set in place. I can across your articles related to the 1975 Burrard Terminal explosion in North Vancouver and you have stated that “Grain dust, it turns out, is about 35 times more explosive than TNT.” I am wondering where this source if from because I find this incredibly interesting and would like to use this statistic in my paper when talking about the nature of a blast wall that was constructed for a multi-unit residential building that is only 25 feet away from the elevators.
