What first attracted my attention to the book was..the cover illustration ! Top quality & perfectly adapted to the very inspiring story between the covers . ( found my copy in used bookshop in Mtl) 15 years have passed and am presently re-reading it with renewed pleasure and respect for this very special author & mom.

My now husband and I had our first real date at Trader Vic’s (I have a photo) and we had several dates after that. We loved it! It was always special and we were very sad to find that it no longer existed. Very sad.

I have been looking into grain elevators for a humanities course focusing on Construction History. More specifically, I am looking at the Halifax Grain Elevator and its relation to the surrounding residential neighbourhoods through case studies of past explosions and preventative measures that have been set in place. I can across your articles related to the 1975 Burrard Terminal explosion in North Vancouver and you have stated that “Grain dust, it turns out, is about 35 times more explosive than TNT.” I am wondering where this source if from because I find this incredibly interesting and would like to use this statistic in my paper when talking about the nature of a blast wall that was constructed for a multi-unit residential building that is only 25 feet away from the elevators.

In reply to Dave. The Russian freighter was empty and sitting high in the water. It was heading to the main land to load up. So because it was empty, it had less momentum. It struck above the iron bumper on the ferry, slid up it and came to a stop quickly. The resulting hole in the ferry was above the water line and after hours of study, while we drifted out to sea, experts determined it would be safe to pull the ships apart and sail back to Tsawwassen under its own steam.

In reply to C Shepherd. I was on the ferry watching the people on the island as we were going through Active Pass. Maybe it was you I saw! My dog was in the car. I was so worried about it, I insisted my dad go down to get it, in case we had to abandon ship. Forcing his way through the chaos, and down to the car deck, he was passed by the crew bringing up the woman who died. I was so happy to see my dog and reunite with him.

I was outside up front on the bow, port side. Saw the freighter come around the island into Active Pass heading straight for us. Never imagined it would hit, so my dad and I just stood at the railing to watch it pass. On impact everyone outside on deck fell over like bowling pins, except my dad and I because he was a WWII sailor on a Corvette and stood firm!

It’s an absolute shame that the presence of FIFA has yet again ruined another local iconic event that has years of history in our area! I just don’t understand! How does FIFA have so much power!?

I have never lived in Lynn Valley, but our relatives did for about 45 years and when we were kids we’d always go to the Lynn Valley Days. It was a great time! In fact my cousin was crowded Queen one year back in the 70’s.

Sorry to hear it won’t be happening this year. Thanks FIFA!!

An already stressed healthcare system has also been somewhat affected by FIFA which is also putting our own citizens with serious healthcare issues being sidelined because of it. Our own doctors and other healthcare professionals are being used for this event. I hate to be a party pooper but just saying…I don’t watch soccer… World Cup means little to me and many others in Vancouver.

Thank you for the history of Lynn Valleys Days.
I’m sorry the FIFA has become such an empowered event to knock off all the exciting Community Events that so many children have taken part in over the years.
I had no idea that the insurance for such events depends on police presence. I suppose because of road closure and safety it has become necessary.
Best wishes for 2027 Lynn Valley Days
