On May 29, 1914, the Empress of Ireland was enroute from Quebec City to Liverpool when she was struck by a Norwegian coal ship after fog descended on the St. Lawrence River. The CPR liner sank in just 14 minutes. Over a thousand people died that night, claiming the lives of more passengers than either the Titanic or the Lusitania, and the tragedy stands as the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canadian history. Beneath Dark Waters follows the lives of the Canadian survivors, including Gordon Davidson, a history professor at UBC.
