Global News – This is BC:

It was great to chat to Jay Durrant about the Empress of Ireland on Global News this week. One of the biggest surprises for me while doing the research for Beneath Dark Waters: the Legacy of the Empress of Ireland Shipwreck, was finding so many local connections and meeting and hearing from descendants who keep adding to this huge Canadian story.

There are more than 170 photos and artwork featured in the book, some of which have never been seen outside of private collections. Art that appears in this Global News clip is gratefully acknowledged here in order of appearance:

  • Margaret Patmore (Gordon Davidson family)
  • Société d’Histoire du bas Canada (Beloeil, QC), Guy D’Astous collection
  • Library and Archives Canada (Ottawa, Ont)
  • Sébastien Hudon (Empress of Ireland, 1914 newsreel)
  • Christopher Best (Arthur Delamont)
  • Langley Family
  • McCord Stewart Museum (Montreal, QC)
  • Vancouver Archives
  • Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Archives (Toronto, Ont)

For many years a plaque hung in St.Dunstan’s Anglican Church in Aldergrove. It was the memorial to Mary Langley killed in the sinking of the Empress of Ireland. I believe the plaque actually originated at the St. Margaret’s Anglican Church in Bradner that was closed before the church in Aldergrove opened. Sadly the plaque was destroyed when someone fire bombed the church, also destroyed were the memorials for local soldiers who died in WWI

That’s really interesting Mike! Such a shame that the plaque and memorials were destroyed

I saw that on Global and thought how interesting that it appeared shortly after my writing about the ’60’s.
All the very best for Christmas and the New Year Eve!
